What is pancreatitis?

My aunt went into hospital with stomach pains. they said she has an inflamed gallbladder . Now they say she has pancreatitis? shes getting her gallbladder out now. shes in intensive care at the moment. what does his mean? they said they might have to remove the pancreas but its a organ and you cant live without your organs?? HELP?
