How do you know when your pancreas / honey moon period is over?

Hello - was told IDDM in Feb 2010 and the honeymoon period was mentioned. I am wondering how you would know when this was over if anyone can help? On sunday i had really serious pain down my left side, like a stitch which made it hard to breath and only painkillers eased it at all. However it was feeling much better yesterday but since then my numbers have been slightly higher than they normally would be. This could be due to stress, am not sure. Does anyone know how the pancreas giving up completely actually feels like and could they please explain it to me as i cannot find anything on the net about this particular angle.
